Soul Winning: The Supernatural Design and Function of the Human

What I see in most churches and most christians, is the recognition that soul winning is necessary, trying to reach people for Jesus. But what I see is people trying to do it in natural strength, and natural reasoning, with natural human logic.  Sometimes people come to Jesus Christ this way, but not as many as ought to be reached. The apostles reached the entire known world in 2 years time. No cars, no computers, no newspapers, No phones. No tech at all, that we rely on so much. I’m not condemning technology, but Christianity is about the heart. You aren’t supposed to try to reach people intellectually, that can come later. Christianity is about the heart, and it is the heart you must reach before the mind can be opened to God.

Have any of you noticed that Jesus tends to put things in order of significance when he speaks? For example: love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. In this command, he puts in the order of how to love God. Emotionally, Spiritually, Mentally, and ends with Physically. Your emotional state is to be a love for God with your heart first and foremost. When that is in line, your soul can follow, and then your mind, and your body. The things you feel, the things you are, the things you think, and the things you do. A very specific order. For very specific reasons, which I will cover later on in this post.

So the first problem with most soul winners?

They try to reach the lost intellectually. Jesus himself was against this. He only spoke intellectually to those who needed it, not those he came to save. He came to save the sinners. How did he reach them? Every instance I see with Him and them, he is showing them God’s love, and compassion. Dining with them, forgiving their sins, healing them. All things which reach the heart of a person. He accepted them for who they are. Sin and all. But he didn’t leave them like that. He changed everyone He came in contact with, one way or another. Most intellectual Christians thump people for their sins, instead of dining with them, and showing the love of God. Some refuse even the friendship of sinners around them. They won’t go out to them, but if the sinners come to their door, they might spout some scriptures and try to explain why this poor soul needs Jesus.  They try to reach the lost naturally. With the same type of mindset that makes the world think that so many are heartless. And yet, so often this is the type of soul winning that gets praised as “having a heart for God.”

Trying to do this work with physical and mental strengths leaves more than a little to be desired. Especially since it’s called soul-winning. The soul is the spiritual portion of a being, and is not reached through the intellect. The soul responds not to the physical, or the mental. It responds to and resonates with emotions. The spiritual portion of the human can in fact be reached, but only through the emotions. Even the intellect has to go through the emotions to get to the soul.

The Spiritual portion of our humanity, is comprised of the spirit and the soul. They are intertwined in such a beautifully complex way that it is difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins. Nonetheless, this is the portion of the human that we are all about, if we follow the great commision. We want to bring people to Christ, but we can’t do it without supernatural power. It  is not possible to reach the world for God without doing it the way He has lined out in Scriptures. Which would involve a Baptism of the Holy Ghost, followed by signs and wonders which will be done as He has promised if you do it His way.

The portion of the human, the Emotions, one of the most amazing parts of our essence, is where we are to reach the lost and dying world. Sadly, many discount this, and say that faith isn’t based on feelings, and only upon facts. But think about this for a second: If faith is based upon facts, then how come it waxes and wanes with the emotions? Peter walked upon the water. He knew it was Jesus who summoned him, and with Jesus standing right there in front of him, sank into the waves anyways.

Matthew 14:28-31

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

I’m not saying that Faith shouldn’t have facts involved in it, but it is heavily based in the emotional intelligence of the human being, in the EQ. If it was only based on facts, it would never waver, and Peter wouldn’t have sunk into the waves. It wasn’t until Peter was afraid that he began to sink. He had an emotional reaction to the wind and waves, and that is what brought him down. I know it won’t always be a feeling, but God created us to feel, and we do feel very strongly.

When Soul winning the way God laid out, you are reaching into all four portions of humanity at the same time.  That is the power of God working through us to reach the lost, and without that power, the miracles, the signs and wonders, then we will never reach the world. Only a person here or there will be reached.
